Jiang Tengyi
Overview and Historical Significance
Jiang Tengyi, born on 30 January 1985 in Shanghai, is one of the pioneering figures who spearheaded Chinese motorsport onto the global stage. Starting his karting journey at the age of 13, he became the first Chinese driver to sign with Italy's Prema Powerteam for the European Formula Renault Championship, as well as the first Chinese racer to compete in North America's Champ Car Atlantic Championship. At the A1 Grand Prix Dubai round, he delivered a remarkable fifth-place finish, setting Team China's all-time best result in the series. In 2014, driving for the Shanghai Volkswagen 333 Racing Team, he clinched the CTCC China Touring Car Championship Super Production Car category Drivers' Championship title.
Karting and Early Promise
In 1998, a 13-year-old Jiang made an impressive karting debut at Shanghai's "Jiangcheng" Karting Track. That same year, he secured third place in the National Karting Championship, earning high praise from motorsport insiders as a prodigy in the making. In 2000, across the full-season championship at the Shanghai Quyang IB Karting Club, he contested just eight rounds yet stormed to four victories to take the overall annual title. In 2001, he bagged the ICA Class title at the Macau Jimei Challenge and finished as runner-up in the China International Karting Championship.
European Single-Seater Campaign
In 2003, backed by approximately RM1,400,000 in sponsorship from FAW-Volkswagen, Jiang headed to Germany to contest the Formula Volkswagen Championship, making history as the first domestic Chinese driver to secure manufacturer backing for a full-season top-tier European racing campaign. In November of that year, his stellar performance during a test session with Prema Powerteam at Italy's Monza Circuit turned heads among the engineers. By March 2004, he officially signed with the renowned Italian outfit—famed for grooming future F1 talent—to race in the Italian Formula Renault Championship. In June that year, he led the Ferrari parade during the grand opening ceremony of the Shanghai International Circuit, serving as the pacemaker for the maiden run on the F1 track.
A1 Grand Prix and Team China
During the 2005–2006 season, Jiang represented A1 Team China. Starting from 19th on the grid in the Dubai round, he carved through the field to finish fifth—Team China’s all-time best result in the championship and its first-ever top-10 finish in a feature race. Ahead of the 2006 A1 Shanghai round, as point-scoring drivers were barred from testing on upcoming circuits, he had to familiarise himself with the Shanghai International Circuit solely by jogging and cycling around the track.
Champ Car Atlantic
In 2007, Jiang signed with Forsythe Championship Racing to compete in the Champ Car Atlantic Championship across 12 rounds, becoming the first Chinese driver in the history of the series. Following a three-year data evaluation, the organisers recognised his immense potential and poured approximately RM60,000,000 into his training over a two-year period.
CTCC and Later Career
In 2014, piloting for the Shanghai Volkswagen 333 Racing Team, Jiang secured the CTCC Super Production Car category Drivers' Championship title, marking the pinnacle of his domestic racing career. He has since remained a regular contender in both the CTCC and TCR China series, claiming runner-up honours in the Super Cup category at the Zhuzhou round in the 2022 season. As of 2025, he remains accredited as a Professional category driver in the CTCC China Touring Car Championship.
